White colouration is relatively rare in beetles. The striking colouring in the Darkling Beetle may be an adaptation to the heat and environment in it's desert home. Taken from the Microsculpture project by Levon Biss, this beautiful portrait of a Darkling Beetle was created from thousands of individual photographs using a bespoke camera system and microscope objectives.
