Shell Ginger

Shell Ginger (Alpinia sp.)

This specimen belongs to a species of Alpinia, a genus in the ginger family. Alpinia occur throughout the warmer parts of Asia and usually grow in forests. The round, hairy fruit shown here comes from a plant similar to galangal (Alpinia galanga), a species that is rare outside Southeast Asia. Like a cardamom pod it contains three rows of fragrant seeds.

Taken from Levon's latest body of work titled The Hidden Beauty of Seeds and Fruits, these macro photographs display the Carpology collection of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.
