Karrajong

Karrajong (Brachychiton populneus)

This drought-tolerant tree is native to Eastern Australia. Its fruits take the form of canoe-shaped pods hanging in clusters of three to five. The species owes its common name to Dharuk, a language once widely spoken by Australian Aborginal peoples who lived in the area around Sydney. Kurrajong derives from the Dharuk word for ‘fishing line’, reflecting one of their uses for the bark.

Taken from Levon's body of work titled The Hidden Beauty of Seeds and Fruits, these macro photographs display the Carpology collection of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.
