Sandillión Pod

Sandillión (Eriosyce aurata)

The Chilean cactus Eriosyce aurata has  longitudinal ribs armed with coarse, curved spines, as shown here.  The spines in cacti help them survive desert environments by providing protection to deter predators; the spines are extremely sharp and can inflict serious injury if an animal attempts to eat any part of the cactus. The spines are often very numerous, covering the surface and trapping an insulating layer of air close to the surface of the plant. At the highest end of the altitudinal range of this species, it endures extraordinary climatic extremes, with night temperatures plunging well below zero and intense heat and sunlight during the day.

Taken from Levon's latest body of work titled The Hidden Beauty of Seeds and Fruits, this macro photograph displays a specimen from the Carpology collection of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.
